| BiG Storage Cheshire Jets announced to day that fans’ favourite , Trinidadian forward Shawn Myers will be leaving to spend the summer with the Geelong Supercats in the Australian SEABL Conference.
Shawn, who is at present recuperating from a dislocated and broken finger, suffered in a game against Newcastle Eagles last month, has spent the last two Australian seasons with the Supercats and last season was named the club’s Most Valuable Player and voted the 'ResCom' Player of the Year.
When he signed for the Jets in October, he retained the option to go back to Australia for their season which starts in March, so, given the severity and timing of injury, it was agreed mutually that the best solution was for the Jets to release him from the beginning of this month, so that he could complete his recuperation and return to playing as quickly as possible ‘down-under’.
Pete Hawkins, BiG Storage Cheshire Jets director commented “We – the management and the fans alike - all owe Shawn a big thank you for his efforts with the Jets this season. Before he signed for us we were really feeling our way, but his arrival made a real difference to the team. He leaves us with the impressive personal statistics of 2nd place in the BBL of 11.3 rebounds per game, 4 th in scoring with 23.9 per game, and an impressive 73.75% success from the free throw line. There is no doubt he will be missed in our final thrust towards a play-off place – but he leaves for Australia with all our very best wishes and the hope that he may be back with the Jets soon.”
Paul Smith, Chief Coach, echoed these sentiments. “It is not easy to put a value on the contribution that Shawn has made this season – he just goes on putting up these amazing figures – points scored, defensive rebounds, and all the little things that are only noticed when he is not around. Thanks to the BiG Storage continued sponsorship, we have been able to start internal discussions about the formation of the team for next year and there are a number of players on my list that I would love to persuade to come back to the Jets and one of these is Shawn.” |
